If you’d like to raise an independent, confident daughter, then teaching her how to cook is a fantastic place to start.
Cooking is a valuable life skill that builds independence, responsibility, and confidence. It teaches important skills like planning, organising, and time management.
Studies have also shown that people who cook at home tend to have healthier diets.
But beyond all of that, cooking together creates connection, memories, and moments your daughter will remember for life.
Here are 7 powerful reasons to cook with your daughter.

1. It improves reading skills and word development.
The better reader we are, the more comprehension and understanding we have — and this is absolutely the case when it comes to reading and following a recipe.
A simple way to build this skill is to ask your daughter to read the recipe out loud as you go. It’s a fantastic (and slightly sneaky) way to get her practising her reading without it feeling like work.
Personally, I’ve noticed that over time my daughter’s understanding of certain words has improved so much. She now knows the difference between sifting, mixing, stirring, folding and more — all just from spending time in the kitchen together.
2. Increases knowledge of measurements.
Without a doubt, my daughter’s understanding of measurements has improved through the baking we’ve been doing together.
When we first started, she didn’t really understand what a half, quarter, or third of a cup looked like — but now she can easily identify them.
Seeing measurements written down in a recipe has also helped her learn to read amounts correctly. For example, she now understands that “¼ cup of sugar” means one-quarter of a cup, not 4 cups as she once thought!
3. Teaches patience and focus.
In the beginning, when my daughter baked with me, she would rush through everything. She was so excited that she’d talk a lot and not pay enough attention to what she was doing, which meant her measurements were often off.
I explained that for a recipe to turn out properly, every ingredient matters and all the measurements need to be correct. I encouraged her to slow down, take her time, and really focus on each step.
Fast forward to now, and she is so much more mindful and focused when she’s baking. She pays close attention to her measurements, and there’s a clear look of concentration on her face because she’s determined to get it right.
If you’d like to help your daughter develop patience and focus, I would definitely recommend baking regularly with her.
4. Boosts confidence.
Each time a child successfully completes a task and receives praise for it, they gain a boost in confidence and their self-esteem grows. This is so important because with confidence and self-esteem comes a sense of independence, which is vital as they get older.
Making pizza is a fantastic introduction to cooking for a child. You don’t even need to make the dough from scratch — there are some great pizza bases you can buy from the store. I personally like the cauliflower bases and low-carb, high-protein options.
Each time I eat something my daughter has helped to make, I intentionally rave about how fantastic it tastes and looks.
Sometimes I also text photos of what she has made to family members because I know they’ll always reply by saying how impressed they are. This is another big boost to her confidence.
5. Improves co-ordination and movements.
There are a lot of techniques involved with baking, from sifting, whisking, stirring, pouring, measuring cups, rolling dough, and using cookie cutters. All of these actions are a fantastic way of improving a child’s coordination and movements.
As they get more experience in the kitchen, you’ll see lots of improvements in the way they move about and conduct themselves in the kitchen.
6. Improves bonding and connection.
Cooking is a fantastic way to spend quality time together. You can make it even more fun for your daughter by:
- buying a special apron for her
- allowing her to choose the recipe
- playing some music in the background
- taking photos or videos of her cooking
7. Sets them up with life skills for the future.
Cooking is such an important life skill for everyone to learn. It teaches so much more than just how to make food — it helps children learn how to plan ahead, stay organised, and take responsibility for what they are doing.
It also plays a big role in understanding food choices and nutrition. When we cook our own meals, we know exactly what is going into them, which can lead to healthier habits over time.
Most importantly, cooking helps your daughter become more self-sufficient. Knowing how to prepare meals means she can take care of herself as she gets older, which builds both independence and confidence.
