I became a “school mum” for the first time in my early forties, long after most of my friends had experienced it—some as much as 20 years earlier! So when it was my turn, I felt a little alone as I didn’t have a mum friend to share the experience with.
I had no idea what to expect or what was expected of me as a school mum. The nerves and anticipation set in the moment I enrolled my daughter in her new school—an entire six months before the school year had even begun!
During my daughter’s first year of school, I found myself learning as I went, often feeling frustrated because I wasn’t sure what I should be doing. I wanted to be like all the other mums at school who had years of school experience and knew how it all worked.
