If you’re a mum of a preteen girl (aged 9–12), chances are she’s constantly asking you to buy her things! Trust me, you’re not alone. My daughter is a teenager now, but I still remember what it was like.
I lost count of how many times she asked for brands like Mecca, Sephora, Nike, Peter Alexander, Sol de Janeiro, and White Fox… not to mention the latest Apple iPhone!
While it may seem excessive, there are some very real reasons why so many preteen girls become fixated on wanting the latest brands and trends.
Why your Preteen might be constantly asking for things:
1. Peer pressure:
Your daughter may want the latest trends, gadgets, or brands to keep up with her friends. At this age, fitting in feels incredibly important, and owning the same things as her peers can help her feel like she belongs.
2. A lack of understanding of finances:
She may not fully grasp the value of money, the effort it takes to earn it, or the importance of prioritising needs over wants. This makes it hard for her to understand why some of her requests are denied.
3. Instant Gratification:
Her generation is used to getting things quickly through modern technology, such as entertainment or answers to questions. Wanting something now might just be a natural reflection of the environment she’s growing up in.
4. Marketing Influence:
Ads on social media and YouTube often target preteens to make them feel like they need the newest trend to be cool, popular, or happy.
A simple way to manage endless “Mum, can you buy me this?” requests
If you’re like me, you simply can’t afford to say yes to every request, and the truth is, she probably doesn’t need most of the things she’s asking for.
That’s why I created a handy proposal form for preteen girls to complete each time they ask you to buy them something. Before you even consider saying yes, they’ll need to stop, research the item, and prepare their case.
The form encourages your daughter to think about whether the item is a want or a need, research the product, compare prices, and consider whether it’s really worth buying.
Best of all, she’ll need to write a proposal and pitch her case to you. It turns those endless requests into a valuable lesson about money and decision-making.
Download the form today and take control of the constant requests!
