As a mum, I dread hearing the words, “I don’t want to go to school.”
The moment I hear them leave my daughter’s mouth, I know instantly that something is wrong at school and that her worries are overwhelming her.
School comes with many challenges, and for my daughter, her worries are often friendship-related:
- Feeling left out or having no one to play with
- Someone being mean to her
- Friendship problems or fallouts
- Bullying
When kids have a problem, our first instinct as parents is to want to fix it for them. But unfortunately, we can’t always control what happens at school.
- If another child no longer wants to be friends with our daughter, we can’t change that.
- If someone doesn’t want to play with her, we can’t force them to.
- If another child says mean things to her, we can’t control their behaviour.
What we can do, though, is give our girls the tools they need to grow in confidence, self-esteem, resilience, and a positive mindset.
Why Confidence and Self-Belief Matter
When girls are secure in themselves and have strong self-belief, it changes everything.
🌸 If someone won’t play with her, she knows she’ll find someone else to play with.
🌸 If someone says mean things to her, she knows those words don’t define her.
🌸 If a friendship ends, she knows she can build new friendships.
It may surprise you to know that almost 1 in 3 kids sometimes don’t want to go to school. Usually, these are the days when their worries feel too big to handle.
The Hard School Days
When their worries feel big, what they need most is:
- Reassurance
- Emotional support
- Confidence-building
- Encouragement
- To feel understood
They need validation and reassurance that they’re not facing their worries alone.
