January

Birthstone: Garnet (Deep red)

Birth Flower: Carnation and Snowdrop

Star Sign: Capricorn (December 22–January 19) and Aquarius (January 20–February 18)

How did it get its name? January is named after the Roman god Janus who is depicted as having two faces. One facing the front so he could see the future, and one facing the back so he could see the past.

Interesting fact: On 1st January each year, nearly 70% of Australians set New Year’s Resolutions. The most common resolutions are to exercise more, eat healthier, lose weight and improve finances.

February

Birthstone: Amethyst (Purple)

Birth Flower: Violet and Primrose

Star Sign: Aquarius (January 20–February 19) and Pisces (February 20–March 20)

How did it get its name? February is named after a Roman purification festival called Februa. During this festival, people were ritually washed.

Interesting fact: Valentine’s Day is held in February, and it’s believed that the oldest surviving Valentine’s letter (in English) was written by Margery Brews to her then fiancé John Paston in February 1477. This beautiful handwritten letter can be viewed on The British Museum’s website.

March

Birthstone: Aquamarine (Blue or Greenish – Blue)

How did it get its name? March is named after the Roman god of war called Mars.

Interesting fact: March was actually the first month of the year until around 700 BCE. It was pushed to third place after the Roman king Numa Pompilius introduced January and February.

April

Birthstone: Diamond (Clear)

Star Sign: Aries (March 21 – April 19) Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

How did it get its name? April is named after the Latin word aperire, which means to open, similar to the way flowers open when they bloom.

Historical event: The Titanic (a luxury steamship) sank in the early morning of 15th April 1912 after hitting an iceberg during its maiden voyage. More than 1,500 passengers lost their lives. Before the voyage, people were calling the Titanic the “unsinkable” ship. If you love to read, then I can highly recommend “The Girl Who Came Home”, an inspirational story that blends both fact and fiction around the Titanic tragedy. I give this story a 5 out of 5 stars!

How did it get its name? May is named after Maia, who was the Greek goddess of fertility.  

Interesting fact: More phone calls are made on Mother’s Day (which falls on the second Sunday in May) than on any other day of the year!

June

How did it get its name? June is named after the Roman goddess Juno, who was the patroness of marriage and childbirth.  

Interesting Fact: June has both the longest and the shortest days of the year. If you live in the northern hemisphere, then the 21st June is the longest day of the year. If you live in the southern hemisphere, then it is the shortest day of the year.

July

Birthstone: Ruby (Red)

How did it get its name? July is named after Julius Caesar (who was born in July). Previously, July was called “Quintilis,” and was renamed following the death of Caesar in 44 B.C.

Fun Fact: Research has found that babies who are born in July have a higher chance of being left-handed. 

August

Birthstone: Peridot (Yellowish Green)

How did it get its name? August is named after Rome’s first emperor, Augustus Caesar (who was the grandnephew of Julius Caesar).

Interesting Fact: Anne Frank wrote her last entry in her diary on 1st August 1944. Three days later, Anne and her family were arrested after the building they were hiding in was raided. Anne died at Bergen-Belsen a Nazi concentration camp in 1945, at the young age of 15. In my opinion, every young girl (over the age of 14) should read “The Diary of Anne Frank” at least once in her life. It’s so inspirational and there’s so much to learn from Anne’s story.

September

How did it get its name? December is named after the Roman word “decimus” which means tenth. It was originally the tenth month in the early Roman calendar and was later pushed out to the twelfth month after January and February were added.

Interesting fact: The name Boxing Day (which falls on 26th December) comes from a time when the rich used to box up gifts to give to the poor. It was traditionally a day off for servants and on this day they received a special Christmas box from their masters, which the servants would take home to share with their families.
